Prosphora is the name given to the loaves of bread offered during Divine Liturgy in the Orthodox Church. Each individual loaf is referred to as a prosphoron. The name comes from a Greek word that simply means “an offering”.

Prosforon is made up of two separate round pieces of leavened  dough which are placed one on top of another and baked together to form a single round loaf.  This double loaf represents the two natures of Christ - Human and Devine.

This bread is also made to honour the deceased and offered to the church to be blessed before it is cut into small pieces and  shared amongst the many people at the end of church service.
